Tatheer Syed is a Registered Practical Nurse at VHA Home HealthCare (VHA) who works with our Strategic Solutions and Partnerships team. Tatheer has been a part of the UHN@Home program since joining VHA in late 2023. She came on board during a period of rapid growth and change, when new clinical pathways were being launched and the program was expanding beyond initial expectations.

Tatheer is one of 5 VHA nurses who were nominated for the 2026 Hospital News Nursing Hero Awards. The Nursing Hero Awards started in 2005 to honour and thank extraordinary nurses across Canada. In honour of celebrating Nursing Week at VHA, we are proud to highlight each of our nurses who received a nomination.

Behind every nursing hero is a wonderful team. We received many comments from Tatheer’s team members. As described by supervisor Menuzha Thayaparan, she is someone who “quickly became a reliable and steady presence, a true backbone of the team, consistently stepping up to support both her colleagues and the evolving needs of the program.” Currently precepting new hires across the York and Eastern regions, Tatheer has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from her preceptees as well, highlighting her strong clinical knowledge, approachable teaching style, and the genuine support she provides as they build their confidence in the field. Tatheer is highly respected not only by her peers but also by VHA’s external partners at UHN. She regularly receives positive recognition for her teamwork, communication, and dedication to high-quality patient care. She works closely with the broader team, always ensuring alignment and continuity in care delivery.

“She has gone above and beyond on many occasions,” says Menuzha. “What truly sets Tatheer apart is her integrity and accountability. She consistently demonstrates professionalism, takes ownership of her work, and leads by example. Her commitment to excellence and her supportive nature makes her a standout nurse and a valued member of the VHA-UHN@Home program.”

Hemjot Mal, VHA’s Senior Director, Health System Solutions and Partnerships, has a lot of gratitude for Tatheer and her work ethic. “This recognition is truly well deserved and reflects the compassion, professionalism, and dedication Tatheer brings to her work every day,” begins Hemjot. “Her commitment to delivering spectacular, person-centred care makes a meaningful difference for the individuals and families she supports. It is inspiring to see the impact of her work being recognized in this way, and we are incredibly proud to have Tatheer as part of the VHA team.”

We were able to catch up with Tatheer after she learned she received a Nursing Hero Award nomination. She is incredibly honoured to be recognized for the award. “Receiving this recognition is both humbling and meaningful to me. Nursing has taught me the importance of compassion, patience, and being there for people during difficult times,” reflects Tatheer. “Knowing that the work I do has made a positive impact is very rewarding and inspires me to continue giving my best every day. I am also very grateful to work alongside such supportive colleagues and clients who make this work so fulfilling.”
