Finding peace, one step at a time: Trisha’s journey towards overcoming hoarding

After living with the challenges of hoarding for more than 30 years, Trisha knew that she wanted to make a change and reduce her hoard but needed help. Upon completing an OCD treatment program, her therapist helped her take the next step by connecting her with the Safer Spaces: Hoarding Support program at VHA Home HealthCare.
“At first, I was extremely anxious, embarrassed and stressed about what to expect,” Trisha admitted. But from the initial contact with the program supervisor to the ongoing in-home visits with a dedicated volunteer, her fears gradually eased. Through the program, she discovered a safe and respectful space where she could begin taking the steps she needed reclaiming her home.
Her volunteer provided steady, compassionate support through the often-emotional process of decluttering.
“He creates an environment where I feel safe, can speak openly and honestly, and face my fears,” she said. “He listens to my concerns, helps me navigate my belongings with empathy, and never pressures me to let go of anything I’m not ready to.”
Thanks to his supportive and non-judgmental approach, Trisha has begun to see changes, not just in her living space, but in her overall wellbeing.
“My space feels lighter, more organized, and I’m finally starting to see how my home can become a place of peace instead of chaos,” she said. “Each session feels like a weight is being lifted off my shoulders.”
While both she and her volunteer recognize that 12 sessions cannot resolve 30 years of hoarding, the progress has been meaningful.
“For the first time in years, I’m close to being able to sleep in my own bed again. That’s a huge milestone.”
Trisha described the Safer Spaces: Hoarding Support program as “life changing.”
“This program has been incredibly rewarding and impactful. I highly recommend it to anyone who needs help tackling clutter without judgment or shame. I’m on my way to creating a space that is physically safe and supports my mental wellbeing.” If you or someone you know is struggling with hoarding tendencies, VHA’s Safer Spaces: Hoarding Support program may be able to help.
