Getting to know Julia Hanigsberg — our most recent Board member

This spring, we were thrilled to welcome Julia Hanigsberg to VHA Home HealthCare (VHA)’s Board of Directors.
As the President and CEO of Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, Julia has played a transformative role in the care of children. Her unique experience and knowledge are a perfect fit for VHA’s commitment to the best possible care at home, delivered with heart and led by science.
Recently, we had the opportunity to ask Julia a few questions about what inspired her to volunteer on the VHA Board and what initiatives at VHA she’s most excited about. Here’s what she had to say.
What made you want to volunteer as a member of VHA’s Board?
Julia: There are four things I always look at when I consider a board role:
- What can I contribute to the organization?
- Does the organization’s purpose align with my values?
- Does the organization have a high-quality team?
- Does the organization have a high-quality board?
VHA ticked all those boxes with the added bonus of being a place where my curiosity can flourish and from which I will learn a lot!
I think my knowledge of the healthcare system, my experience with advocacy, understanding of the way government functions and deep experience in governance can be helpful. I’m really impressed by Kathryn Nichol, VHA’s President and CEO and her leadership team. My team at Holland Bloorview has partnered really effectively with VHA to the benefit of the children and families we serve. I also have a family member who receives PSW services in the home and so I see through their eyes the compassionate caring team in action.
What do you see as the most important priorities for VHA right now?
Julia: I’m excited to see the innovations that VHA comes up with to keep moving the bar on what kind of care and service can be provided in the home. It is vitally important to advocate for the importance of home care with the context of any kind of health system transformation. I also am very passionate about truth and reconciliation as well as equity, diversity and inclusion and am inspired by the ways that VHA prioritizes this for both its clients and its team.
Is there a particular area of VHA’s work that you’re most excited about?
Julia: I’m really interested in the VHA research agenda where the organization has taken a huge leadership role. Homecare science is a developing field and it is so exciting to be involved in shaping that landscape.
We are delighted to have Julia join VHAs Board of Directors and look forward to her valuable insight and guidance.
