Celebrating Our Child and Family Support Workers for Community Support Month

October is Community Support Month in Ontario. Community Support programs and services throughout the province help over one million Ontarians live well at home and in their communities through services like personal care, homemaking, caregiver support, and more. Community Support Month is a chance to celebrate and raise awareness about these services and the service providers who deliver them. This year’s theme is “Everyone Needs Community Support Services“, because these programs touch every corner of our communities.

Community-based support for families is where VHA Home HealthCare (VHA) started in 1925, providing homemaking services for families when the mother was ill. Today, we deliver a broad range of in-home, mental health, physical and social services for individuals and families in urgent need. Through a committed team of caring professionals and our extensive community networks, we offer a continuum of supports to help our clients live at home with more independence.
This October, we honour the heart of our Responsive Community Care team: our Child and Family Support Workers.
They are compassionate, skilled, and deeply committed individuals who show up every day with patience, empathy, and strength. Whether comforting a newborn, supporting a parent in crisis, or building routines for a busy household, they bring calm, care, and connection into the homes they serve.
Our workers do more than provide care; they build trust, restore confidence, and bring dignity to families, navigating some of life’s toughest moments. Many of our clients rely on our Child and Family Support Workers for understanding, friendship, skills and hands-on help.
To highlight the astonishing impact our Child and Family Support Workers have on the lives of our clients, we are sharing some of the recent comments we have received:
“The Child and Family Support worker that was assigned to me, she is truly a mother — experienced, professional, compassionate, and incredibly patient. Before VHA connected me with her I can’t imagine how I got through those long days and nights alone; this is my first time being a mom and I felt lost. Since she arrived, I have finally been able to lift my head up and see daylight again. She gave me the chance to shower and cook peacefully, and showed me practical, safe ways to care for my baby. I wanted to express my heartfelt gratitude to VHA for sending her to help me. I hope one day I can have my family here in Canada, but until then your service — and the worker in particular — has been a real lifeline.”
“I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for the incredible support and mentorship you provided during my postpartum period and the extended assistance period. Your unwavering commitment to helping me navigate such a challenging yet beautiful phase of life has been a true blessing. The guidance, care, and encouragement you offered made an immeasurable difference in my journey as a new mum. It was through your kindness that I gained the strength and confidence to manage and embrace my new responsibilities with grace. Your presence during this time not only supported me but also positively impacted my twins’ early days, which is something I will forever cherish.”
“I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to VHA Home HealthCare for the wonderful care you provided me with when I newly gave birth to my beloved beautiful daughter. Words aren’t enough but truly, my heart speaks volumes. Thank you so much VHA Home HealthCare! ❤️”
Thank you for the quiet heroism you bring to your work. You are not only caregivers — you are lifelines, role models, and the soul of community support. Join us in recognizing, thanking, and wishing our Child and Family Support Workers a Happy Community Support Month!
