Program Description: To provide temporary relief and support services to at risk families caring for children from birth to six years of age. The relief service will enable parents to take a break from the relentless demands of parenting and attend to their own needs.
Objective: To interact and provide simple comforts to children in such a way as to enhance children’s capacity for successful development i.e. stimulating gross/fine motor and enriching language skills.
Area Served: Priority neighbourhoods in Scarborough
Responsibilities:
- Visit on a regular and consistent basis
- Engage in infant stimulation and child development
- Plan and organize activities
- Provide information on community resources available to parents
- Complete and submit a monthly progress report
- Provide appropriate community resources to families based on their needs
- Report any unusual circumstances or behavior to the Volunteer Coordinator
- Attend monthly meetings
Time Commitment: Volunteers will visit a family weekly for a period of three hours. Days and time are negotiable between volunteer and family. Minimum one year commitment is required. Opportunities will be available to help more families during this time frame.
Age Requirement: Must be 18+
Skill Requirements:
- Flexibility and acceptance of differences, such as culture and values
- Able to act independently within the boundaries of the position description
- Creativity in planning and implementing activities
- Knowledge of community resources
- Second language an asset
Training:
- Orientation and professional training on an on-going basis is provided
- Monthly Volunteer Support Meetings
- Ongoing education/development opportunities
